About

Julie Berthelot

I was born and raised in beautiful Blind River, Ontario; a small town on the Trans-Canada highway surrounded by forest and lakes, great and small. I now live in Aylmer, Québec (not far from Ottawa), but try to get back to Lake Duborne every summer, where I reconnect with family, extended family, and lifelong friends :-)

So much of my work is inspired by the natural beauty around my hometown and it is where I got my start as an artist. My first acrylic painting was done while attending high school there and, not long after, I was asked to do my very first commissioned piece.

I've lived in a few different places; attending school in Montreal for my Bachelor of Fine Arts from Concordia, Victoria BC for a change of pace, and Ottawa to return to school to learn about business. I've also worked many different jobs, but never stopped painting, and am happy to say that I've completed hundreds of commissioned pieces since that first one in Blind River, and created a lot of other artwork that I'm very proud of.

If you're in the Ottawa area, the good people at Orange Art Gallery always have some of my work on hand, and obviously you've found my site . . . so please enjoy looking around and be sure to get in touch if you have any questions or recommendations.

All the best,

Julie Berthelot

Urban Forest

This series began as one painting I made for my apartment in Ottawa, which I tried to make completely abstract, but ended up looking like trees . . . so I went with it.

Now I'm over 150 paintings into the series, with no signs of slowing. It has evolved a lot since that first painting, and I can't wait to see where it will go.

These are generally medium to very large paintings, usually based on landscape and nature and created using a lot of texture, a stylized painting style, and some paint dropped on the canvas in a variety of ways.

(It's so much easier just to show them . . . please check them out here).

Portraits

I've been doing portraits a lot longer than the Urban Forest series. I love to paint people and find it endlessly fascinating and challenging.

Most of them have been commissioned pieces, but I also really love to paint my two adorable little children, siblings, scenes from great movies, and any other imagery I find inspiring at the time.

(Again . . . images are worth a million . . . please check my portraits out here).
